Eat Carbs and Still Lose Weight?

eat carbs and still lose weight

Eat Carbs and Still Lose Weight?

Carb-cutting is one of the most common diet recommendations I encounter. But there are a lot of myths surrounding carbs and weight loss.

In this article, I’ll break down the truths and myths about cutting carbs and give you my final answer on this popular weight loss method. It’s not quite as simple as you may think!

What are Carbohydrates?

It’s important to keep in mind that carbohydrates are essential for normal bodily functions, particularly when it comes to energy production. Without carbohydrates of any kind, your body will have to rely on other energy systems that are less efficient for most daily activities.

Carbohydrates fall into 2 categories: simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are the worst option when trying to lose weight, as they cause immediate spikes in bloods sugar that fall quickly, leaving you hungry and craving more. Complex carbs, on the other hand, are converted to glycogen and either produce a more sustained source of energy or are stored for later use.

Complex carbohydrates are better for you in general, particularly vegetable-based options like spinach, leafy greens, barley, and whole grains. These examples are also more nutritionally rich, so they’ll support your overall health and wellbeing.

Carbohydrates and Weight Loss

Carbohydrates definitely play a direct role in your weight loss efforts. The problem is, bad carbs like breads, pastas, and starches are high in calories and more likely to be deposited as fat in your body. Good carbs, like those found in vegetables, are better for you and will improve your weight loss efforts.

Eat Carbs and Still Lose Weight

The bottom line is that you should not remove all carbs from your diet. Instead, cut down on your carbohydrate intake. The daily recommended intake for carbohydrates is 300 grams, but cutting things down to around 50 grams per day can significantly improve your weight loss efforts. And when you do eat carbs, make sure they’re healthy choices (for example, whole grain vs. white bread).

Research has also shown that low-carb diets are more effective for people with poor insulin sensitivities. If you’re already at a decent weight and just want to tone up, you’re probably okay in this regard. But if you struggle with insulin sensitivity issues, then a low-carb diet is appropriate for your needs.

Either way, there’s no doubt that cutting down carbs will improve your weight loss efforts and help you shed some of that extra body weight. But there’s no need to cut out carbs altogether. Go with healthy, nutritional options and eat them around your workouts. These will ensure optimal calorie expenditure.

Getting the Low-Carb Diet Right

Since you’re cutting down on carbs, this is the perfect time to also increase your protein intake. Protein will not only support lean muscle growth, it will also boost your metabolism and get you burning more fat and calories. Protein is the perfect carb replacement!

Healthy, natural protein supplements like Optimum 100% Natural Whey and Vega Complete Whole Food Health Optimizer are great options and can really keep you feeling satisfied. For snacking, I recommend NOW Almonds or Promax Protein Bars.

If the low-carb diet isn’t right for you, then check out this innovative metabolism-boosting supplement that’s getting a lot of attention – 7-Keto LeanGels. It’s a combination of naturally derived supplements that will get you seeing real results fast!

The Best Ab Workout

the best ab workout

The Best Ab Workout

If you’re like most of my clients, you’re probably always on the lookout for the next best ab workout.

Your abs and core muscles are one of your most defining features. And now that bathing suit season is approaching, they’re probably on your mind.

Abdominal muscles, as well as your oblique and lower back muscles, are also extremely functional, proving balance and stability to many of your other muscle and your entire body. This is why, in addition to looks, abs are a vital component of your entire workout routine. Without well-developed abs, your other workouts will suffer.

This article offers up my best ab workout, based on my years of experience as a trainer and my own personal experience with ab workouts. Having sexy, defined abs may be closer than you think!

Ready for this? Here’s my best ab workout, just in time for summer!

Best Ab Workout – The Plan

Here’s my basic philosophy on working out your abs. Depending on your workout program and lifestyle, you have 2 general options for ab workouts. The first is to work out your abs in short bursts on a frequent basis (for example, every other day). The second option is to have full, dedicated ab workouts once or twice a week (like any other muscle group).

I tend to go with the second option myself, but both can be equally effective. This workout is designed based on the second perspective – it’s a full length, dedicated abdominal and core workout that will get you seeing fast results.

The total workout takes approximately 30 minutes, and depending on how well equipped you are, most could be done at home or at the gym.

When it comes to sets and reps, you want to max out your energy expenditure and exhaust your abdominal muscles as much as possible. In most cases, aiming for 20-30 reps will be sufficient, but listen to your body! Everyone is different.

I’m also going to give you the option of doing between 2 and 3 sets of each exercise. If you’re a beginner or short on time, 2 may be a good starting point. But your ultimate goal should be 3 sets each exercise for this workout.

Best Ab Workout – The Exercises

Best Ab Workout – Conclusion

There you have it, one killer ab workout! Add this to your workout routine today and start seeing some serious results in just a few weeks.

Make sure you follow up this workout with a good quality protein supplement like Optimum 100% Natural Casein for optimal results. If you’re looking for an energy boost before your workout, I’d also check out Gaspari Nutrition SuperPump MAX. Not only will it rev up your ab workout, it will also get you burning a ton of extra calories – and that means even better looking abs!

And that means cooking healthy meals at home! In order to make healthy eating part of your lifestyle, cooking with whole foods and real ingredients is a must.

Of course eating healthy also requires sufficient amounts of protein, fiber, and vitamin-rich vegetables, in addition to cutting back on fats and simple carbohydrates. So in order to help you eat better and healthier, I’m offering up 5 recipes for weight loss. You can’t go wrong with these delicious meal ideas!

5 Tasty Recipes for Weight Loss

1. Crispy Chicken Quesadillas

Ingredients: ½ Tbsp canola oil, 1 large skinless/boneless chicken breast, 1 red onion sliced, 4 oz mushrooms sliced, 1 poblana pepper seeded and sliced, 1 ½ cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese, 4 medium whole grain tortillas, guacamole.

Directions: Heat a large sauté pan to medium heat. Add the oil and chicken breast (diced into small pieces) and cook until just done. Add onion, pepper, and mushroom and sauté until vegetables brown (approx. 5 minutes). Top 2 tortillas with cheese and sautéed chicken/vegetables, and cover with remaining tortillas. For that extra crispy texture, cook each quesadilla in a clean frying pan with a bit of oil.

2. Chinese Chicken Salad

Ingredients: 1 head of red cabbage, ½ Tbsp sugar, 2 cups chopped cooked chicken, 1/3 cup Asian vinaigrette, 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves, ¼ cup sliced roasted almonds, 1 cup mandarin oranges.

Directions: Slice the cabbage into thin strips and toss with sugar in large bowl. Heat chicken to desired temperature, and add to cabbage. Then top with cilantro, mandarins, almond slices, and vinaigrette. Toss and serve.

3. Green Chile Cheeseburger

Ingredients: 1 pound ground lean beef, salt and pepper, 1 can roasted green chilies chopped, 4 slices Swiss cheese, 4 tomato slices, 4 red onion slices, 4 whole grain buns.

Directions: Heat a grill pan or iron skillet. Season beef with salt and pepper and form into 4 patties. Add burgers to hot pan and cook for 3-5 minutes, then flip and top with chilies and slice of cheese. Cook for another 3-5 minutes depending on preference. Toast bun, add burger, and top with onions and tomatoes.

4. Grilled Pork with Peaches

Ingredients: 4 bone-in pork chops (thick cut), olive oil, salt and pepper, 2 firm peaches pitted and halved, 2 Tbsp roasted pine nuts, 1 red onion sliced thinly, ½ cup blue cheese crumbled, 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar.

Directions: Brush pork with olive oil and season with salt and pepper, then grill on medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes per side. Brush peach halves with oil and grill for 5 minutes while pork chops are cooking. Remove pork chops and top with peach slices, pine nuts, onions, blue cheese, and drizzle with balsamic vinegar.

5. Balsamic Strawberry Shortcake

Ingredients: 2 cups sliced strawberries, ¼ cup balsamic vinegar, black pepper, 1 Tbsp butter (optional), 4 wedges of angel food cake, whipped cream.

Directions: Mix strawberries, vinegar, and pinch of pepper and marinate for 15 minutes. Cook cake slices in a buttered or nonstick pan until caramelized and toasted. Plate cake slices and top with strawberries and vinegar. Add whipped cream as desired. The balsamic vinegar in this one will help give you metabolism a boost!

Healthy Eating Tips

Healthy Eating Tips

Feel like it’s time to revamp your diet and start eating more healthy?

Then you’ve come to the right place. With winter over and summer beginning, this is the ideal time to get your diet in check and adopt some healthy habits.

Healthy eating is all about common sense and making the right choices on a daily basis. I’m not a fan of fad diets and always support a whole foods approach. A whole foods diet is simply one that consists of lightly processed, natural food options. Sounds easy enough right?

In addition to going with whole foods as much as possible, there are a number of other things you can do to eat more healthy. Let’s take a look…

Healthy Eating Tips for Revamping Your Diet

1. Replace Bad Fats with Good Fats – We all know that it’s a smart decision to reduce your intake of unhealthy fats like saturated and trans fats. These bad fats are especially common in processed, deep fried, and fast foods, and they’ll spell disaster for your health and fitness efforts. Make sure you’re reading your nutrition labels and avoiding these foods!

Instead, you should be eating foods that contain healthy fats, like omega-3 fatty acids. These foods include nuts, avocadoes, olive oil, and fish. Believe it or not, these fats will actually boost your metabolism and help redistribute fat deposits away from your midsection! That’s why I recommend taking a daily fish oil supplement like Optimum Fish Oil, a natural source of these healthy fats.

2. Rethink Carbohydrates – Carbohydrates have really gotten a bad rap in the last few years. There’s no doubt about it, cutting down on carbs is a sure way to tone up and lose weight. But you shouldn’t abandon carbs altogether – your body needs them! The trick to eating carbs is to make the right choices. This means going with whole grain options whenever possible, and eating carbs other than just bread and pasts – both of which are highly processed options.

3. Eat Foods that Burn More Fat – That’s right, you can actually eat foods that will boost your metabolism and get you burning more calories and fat on a daily basis! Any foods that are high in protein and fiber will do this automatically, and they’ll also keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer! This is why I always recommend a quality whey protein supplement like Optimum 100% Natural Whey. If you’re vegan, this Vega Complete Whole Food Health Optimizer is another great option.

Other metabolism-boosting foods include Nutiva Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil, NOW Astragalus, NOW Almonds, Nutiva Organic Chia Seeds, and NOW Spirulina Powder. You’ve probably also heard about the fat-burning effects of green tea, but if you’re looking for an even bigger impact, try a concentrated green tea extract like Irwin Naturals Green Tea Fat Metabolizer.

Not only are these foods great for your metabolism, they also contain other healthy nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants that will give you more energy and prevent aging!

Healthy Eating Tips – Conclusion

These healthy eating tips are great for supporting pretty much any health and fitness goal, including muscle building, toning, and weight loss. Get in the right habits sooner than later, and you’ll start seeing the results you’re looking for!

10 Minute Workout

10 minute workout

10 Minute Workout

Think you can’t get a good workout in just 10 minutes? Think again!

While I’m not a big fan of fad workout programs that require only 10 minutes a day, I recognize that schedules can be hectic, and some days you may not have time for a full workout.

And if you only have 10 minutes, then you likely won’t have time to hit the gym. Home workouts can be just as effective as gym workouts with the right pieces of equipment. Let’s take a look at my 10 minute home workout…

10 Minute Home Workout

This workout is designed to be a full body workout, so this one’s great for jumpstarting your metabolism for the day or burning off a big dinner at night. And because you only have 10 minutes, you won’t need to worry about tiring out your muscles too much.

The Equipment

For this workout, you’ll need 3 pieces of equipment. First, invest in a good push-up/pull-up bar like this Deluxe Chin Up Bar. It’s a very versatile and effective piece of equipment.

Second, you’ll need an exercise ball like this Xercise Ball Package With DVD And Pump. This is something that’s really great to have at home.

And finally, grab a set of resistance bands like these Adjustable Resistance Toning Tubes. They seem simple enough, but they can add resistance to your workouts without needing dumbbells.

The Workout Plan

For all exercises, do 1-2 sets of 10-12 reps, depending on your level of fitness and your speed through this circuit. This circuit will maximize the number of muscle groups you’re able to work in such a short period of time.

Sound like a good little workout? Trust me, this one will get you working up a sweat! The key is to move as quickly as possible between workouts. Remember, with only 10 minutes to work out, you can worry about your rest afterwards.

The Recovery

To maximize the results of any workout plan, whether at home or at the gym, make sure you follow up your workouts with a satisfying, high-quality protein supplement like Gaspari Nutrition Myofusion.

Increasing your protein intake will not only support lean muscle growth, but it will also give your metabolism a major boost and get you burning extra fat and calories.

If you’re looking to get serious about your weight training, you should also consider taking a couple amino acid complexes. In particular, Optimum Glutamine and Optimum BCAA 1000 Caps will improve recovery and increase your gains considerably.

Home Workout Options

If you’re looking for other good home workout ideas, I’d check out Hip Hop Abs or P90X. I’ve tried both myself, and they’re both very effective workout programs. They can offer you some great options if you don’t have time to make it to the gym.

Or, if you’re looking to add some variety to your workout schedule, try a home yoga program. This Gaiam Yoga for Beginners Kit is great for beginners and includes an instructional DVD.

Pool Ready Abs

Pool Ready Abs

Whether it’s summer or you’re traveling to some tropical paradise, pool ready abs is going to be top of your mind.

That also means it’s time to get your fitness routine back in gear!

And what better than an ab workout to get you looking toned and ripped in that bathing suit? After all, a chiseled six pack is one of the hottest looks which will boost your motivation and confidence to a whole new level.

In order to get your abs in optimal swim suit shape, I’ve designed a killer ab workout that’s sure to give you real results. This workout plan is all about circuit training and getting your metabolism in high gear!

Some Things to Consider

First, it’s important to remember that diet plays a massive role in getting a toned and chiseled midsection. It’s absolutely essential that you burn extra fat and calories if you want to show off all your hard work at the gym.

In addition to the basic rules of cutting down on fat, sugar, and sodium, you should also be significantly increasing your protein intake. Not only will this help support the development of lean muscle mass, but you’ll also give your metabolism a boost. Adding a whey protein supplement like Gaspari Nutrition Myofusion or Optimum 100% Natural Whey is an easy way to increase your protein.

Another easy way to boost your metabolism is to take an omega-3 fatty acid supplement like NOW Ultra Omega-3. These healthy fats actually assist your body in burning and reducing the size of fat cells. As for a fat-burning supplement, I highly recommend the new 7-Keto LeanGels. It offers a unique combination of fat-burning substances that are having some amazing results!

The Pool Ready Ab Workout

Okay, now that your diet is check and primed for six pack abs, it’s time to get moving. Before I get to the exercises in this workout plan, it’s important to remember that you need to work out your entire body for optimal results. Spot-training simply doesn’t work when it comes to burning fat.

This pool ready ab workout is based on circuit training, which means moving between exercises at a fast rate with little rest in between. It also utilizes supersetting, which simply means alternating between sets of 2 exercises without rest in between. Both are great time-saving techniques, and both will get your metabolism in high gear!

Here’s the ab workout plan. Do these 5 supersets in about 30 minutes, and you’ll be on your way to a sexy, chiseled midsection just in time for summer!

  • Cool-Down – 5-10 Minutes of Light Cardio

Move between workouts as quickly as possible, and stay hydrated! For all exercises, do as many reps as you can until exhaustion. In most cases, that means anywhere from 10 to 25 reps (especially for the ab exercises).

I recommend doing this workout once or twice a week at most. Remember, a six pack requires hard work and dedication. To get that extra boost out of your ab workouts, try taking an energy supplement like USPLabs Jack3d or Gaspari Nutrition SuperPump MAX. It will totally transform your workouts and help you get totally pumped!
